History of Epsilon Zeta

In 1985, Joe Foggiato and Peter Ligget, two Humboldt State University Students who lived on the 3rd floor of Sunset Hall, made the effort to create a new Chi Phi Fraternity Chapter on the HSU campus. For two years they networked and promoted the fraternity all over campus, steadily and rapidly gaining new members.

With the willing assistance of local alumni like Larry Myers of the Alpha Tau Chapter, the fledgling fraternity grew to more than 30 members and received it's charter in 1987. The founding members of the new Epsilon Zeta Chapter of the Chi Phi Fraternity were: Peter Ligget as Alpha, Timothy Thomas Charters Mitchell as Beta, Joseph Anthony Foggiato as Gamma, and Robert Scott Calks as Delta. Other founding members included Scott Kiefer, James Dudley, Eric Wayland, and Geoff Hitchingham.

The Chartering Ceremonies were held in the Kate Buchanan Room at HSU, where other brothers, alumni, and fraternity offices from other parts of the country joined the new brothers, including Oregon State University, the University of California at Davis, and Atlanta Georgia to the sign the Charter. These men had all gathered here to sign the Charter and celebrate this momentous and historic occasion for the new Epsilon Zeta Chapter of the Chi Phi Fraternity.

The Epsilon Zeta Chapter recruited many new brothers for the next several years, and it was these brothers that inspired greater standards of brotherhood, friendship, trust, respect, and personal integrity that continued on even after the older brothers graduated and new brothers stepped up to take their places. These "new" brothers included men such as Mike Binsacca, Tim Charters, John Schutt, James Green, Eric Reimer, Art Fernandez, and many others. Many of these men have gone on to become noted leaders and businessmen both locally and nationally. Some of Epsilon Zeta's alumni who live locally include: Kokyou Chau, businessman and property owner; Neil Aitkin, insurance agent; and Gabe Groom, screen printer.

Epsilon Zeta, although only twenty years old, draws its strength from the qualities of brotherhood, friendship, and personal integrity practiced everyday by the chapter's members. With the dedication of the past, present, and future brothers, the strength of Epsilon Zeta will only grow stronger in the years to come.

Chi Phi is not just for college, it is for life. If you are interested in becoming a part of our dynamic brotherhood, with brothers all over the country providing support, please get in touch with us or stop by our table during the week of Rush.
