Why Rush
Get your four years' worth
Think about all of the stereotypes associated with fraternities and throw them out the window. Humboldt is a unique college experience, and even four years is not enough to take advantage of all of the available opportunities. It would be a waste of your college years to spend all of your time locked up in your room, plowing through problem set after problem set, while missing the amazing experience you can have outside the classroom.
Sports, community service, friends, partying, socializing, being a leader, becoming a brother- there are a lot more experiences to have at Humboldt, and Fraternities are the perfect places to have them all.
So when you think about the next 4 years of your life, consider becoming a part of the Greek system. You won't regret it.
Why should your son or daughter Rush? (for parents)
There are many opportunities available at Humboldt and most of them are outside the classroom. Becoming a member of a fraternity expands horizons and lends not only a richer and more well rounded college experience but promotes social and emotional growth that cannot be taught in any Humboldt classroom.
Life Skills
The responsibilities that members take on within their fraternity provide valuable life experience. Helping to oversee the day-to-day operations of a fraternity is a great learning opportunity for many students.
Networking
- Alumni often act as advisors to chapters, helping students learn, grow, and develop leadership skills. They can also be a valuable resource when students prepare for interviews and job searches, serving as a link between a student and the professional world.
- After graduation, alumni groups allow students to stay connected to their fraternity no matter where in the world they end up.
Academics
- Upperclassmen hold study sessions for freshmen before big freshmen exams.
- Fraternities keep notes and handouts from various classes on file for future reference.
- Upperclassmen function as mentors to freshmen. For any freshman class, chances are there is an upperclassman in the house that is an expert on the material.
- Houses have academic departments that can provide support to first year students who may struggle with a difficult Humboldt course load.
Athletics
- Many members of Fraternities play varsity and club sports.
- Fraternities have a strong presence in the Humboldt intramural sports program. These IM sports leagues provide great opportunities for all athletic skill levels and can be the source of a lot of fun, healthy competition.
Social Life
- Fraternities provide a number of different social experiences for their members. These activities involve formals, mixers, parties, and Greek Week.
- Many of the social events of a Fraternity are designed to provide members the opportunity to meet and interact with other students at Humboldt, whether they live in a dorm or off campus. These events promote a cohesive Humboldt community and can be very rewarding for all groups involved.
- Many visitors to Arcata are surprised to learn that Humboldt is the center of social life in this small college town. With one of the smallest Greek communities in all of California, Humboldt is a great place to have fun. All varieties of college students can be seen at our social events.
Community Service
- Fraternities volunteer their time at various food banks, shelters, and fundraising events. Fraternities greatly value philanthropy.
- Chi Phi sponsors their own fundraising events throughout the year. These events give the opportunity to be creative and have a good time while helping out a worthy cause.
Leadership Opportunities
- Chi Phi provides many leadership opportunities, both within the fraternity and on a system-wide level.
- Leaders in the fraternity community are leaders on campus. The University community looks to Greek members to provide leadership in all situations.
- Learning to be a leader in the Greek community prepares one for the leadership opportunities in the real world.
